Building for the planet
If architecture begins with people, then it should be guided by the broader challenges of securing a sustainable future for the planet on which we live.
As architects we must help shoulder this responsibility. Our work is not just about making buildings that function sustainably in the present; it’s also about ensuring their design continues to work sustainably in the future.
In practice, this begins by getting clients interested – and investing – in innovative yet workable methodologies that can reduce embodied energy, energy in use and life cycle costs. It may also involve looking at the past, adapting and re-engineering the fabric of existing buildings, or adopting traditional techniques for saving energy. By acknowledging this broader life cycle, we can make every building work responsibly and last respectfully.
