The Portway fit-out

Altos Labs, Cambridge

location | Cambridge  year | 2021

MCW were appointed in August 2021 to work collaboratively with Scotch Partners and Francis Hunter to deliver approximately 60k sq ft of Cat B fit-out of the Portway Building at Granta Park for Altos Labs.

The brief for the works was focused on the rapid delivery of a state-of-the-art working environment for 150 researchers, -comprising of laboratories with core requirements for technical bench space, equipment, and instrumentation space; areas for write-up and desk space activity; carefully located areas for break-out, meeting rooms, and individual offices; a café; and a 130+ capacity lecture theatre.

MCW utilised BIM/Revit software to fully coordinate the building elements plus 400+ pieces of specialist equipment and 300+ pieces of furniture prior to work commencing on site, thus eliminated the risks of cost increase and programme delay. Fit-out contractor Area were appointed in December 2021 and completed the works at Blocks C&D in May 2022.

Altos Labs officially opened its doors to its Cambridge Institute of Science on the 22nd of June 2022. Its teams of researchers focus on cellular rejuvenation programming to restore cell health and resilience, with the goal of reversing disease to transform medicine. The Cambridge Institute of Science will be part of hyper-collaborative global Altos community with centres also in San Diego and San Francisco.

We had a vision for a building to which we look forward to going in the morning and not wanting to leave in the evening. We have such a building! Bathed in copious natural light, and with well-furnished spaces, this building naturally induces a feel-good atmosphere and encourages interaction between people, which is fundamental to the mission of Altos. To say that we like it is an understatement - we love it.
