New Collaborative Academic Building

University of Bedfordshire

location | Park Campus, Luton   year | 2012  value | £30m  size | 11,700m2

Feasibility study for a flexible facility for teaching, learning and research. The scheme was designed to enable the co-location of a number of disparate groups (Health and Social Science, Sports Science, Computing and Bioscience) to share a more collaborative and efficient environment.

The project requires the demolition of existing buildings and the construction of new accommodation directly alongside facilities that will remain operational throughout. We have led the multi-stakeholder consultation dialogue as well as being the design team lead.

The proposed scheme represents a significant increase in scale over the current buildings on the site. A colonnade at street level leads to the main entrance which opens into a multi-valent informal learning environment that connects to the other side of the town centre campus. The scope of the project has been reconsidered by the University and we are now implementing a scheme on the same site to a revised brief, focussing on STEM related activity.
