MRC Laboratory of Molecular BiologyMRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology3
For nearly two decades, we’ve partnered with the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, including delivering their groundbreaking new home at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus in 2012. This highly sustainable, flexible research facility supports a world-class scientific research community, winning 12 Nobel Prizes.
Our long-standing relationship is based on trust and adaptability. Whether it’s a kitchen refit or a new digital imaging facility, our level of commitment and dedication to excellence are the same.

1 MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology
The building provides an environment in which innovative medical research, translation and collaboration can flourish and – appropriately – resembling a chromosome pair. The design challenges the usual form for this type of laboratory by locating the primary air handling plant in four iconic free-standing, stainless steel clad, sculptural plant towers feeding laterally into interstitial service zones.
2 Digital Imaging Extension
This feasibility project explored the opportunities and issues around the intention to create a new Imaging and Data Centre to the existing facilities on the Biomedical Campus. A preferred option was selected from a number of alternative design solutions.
3 Interior Works and Signage
We continue to work alongside the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology team – and after 12 years of use, are now initiating a rolling refit of the communal kitchens, meeting and breakout places.
Exhibition Space and Reception
—
We have installed a small ‘showcase’ facility alongside the main entrance to enable the curated display of archival material and current research activity. A successful test of the inherent adaptability of this highly flexible building.
Lounge Space and Restaurant
—
We are undertaking a series of upgrades at the level 4 restaurant to better serve the needs of the users. A lounge space adjacent to the restaurant is set to be renovated to create more privacy to accommodate a reading nook.
Flexible Space
—
We are also exploring ways to create an informal space at level 3i which- a place for gathering, exhibiting, presenting and other group activities.

Signage
—
Planning consent has been granted for new external signage that will reinforce the presence and identity of the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology – particularly important as the new Cambridge South station nears completion.
