Creative Quarter
Anglia Ruskin University
location | Cambridge year | ongoing size | 10,000m2
The Creative Quarter will be the new home for the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) at Anglia Ruskin University Cambridge Campus.
The core idea is the creation of a new campus quarter that is clearly identifiable as the heart of creative activity on campus, by co- locating currently disparate and ‘invisible’ activities in a more cohesive arrangement and to improve their visibility to the wider community.
The Creative Quarter will be centred around the Coslett and Ruskin courtyard as a focal space from which the primary ‘making’ spaces will be visible. In addition, a new arrival and student facing ‘reception’ facility will provide a welcoming, vibrant and distinctive entry point for the Faculty and allow much improved access to the existing gallery space within Ruskin.
Current ground floor accommodation within Coslett will benefit from increased areas of glazing – improving quality of natural lighting as well as offering more of a ‘shop front’ to pedestrians.
A new media and performance building will replace the existing Webb building frontage to contain the courtyard on its eastern side but will enable better connectivity by opening a new route alongside Peter Taylor Building. The new building is conceived as a functional extension to the facilities within Coslett and not as a ‘stand-alone’ building. Coslett will benefit from an improved external envelope – both visually and thermally.
The Creative Quarter should also provide an opportunity to reinforce ARU identity and ‘brand’ using improved signage and curated larger scale artwork and installations.
