Royal Cambridge Hotel

University of Cambridge and Cambridge Judge Institute

location | Cambridge  year | 2019   Size | 80 rooms

Cambridge City Council has granted planning permission and listed building consent for the MCW designed 80-room redevelopment and extension of the Royal Cambridge Hotel. The Hotel forms part of the Grade II listed Scroope Terrace, located within the Cambridge Central Conservation area. This project presents a remarkable opportunity to breathe new life into this special but tired building which occupies an important place in the City.

A primary factor in ensuring the long-term viability of the hotel relies upon the increasing of overall capacity. The approved design therefore includes the addition of two new extensions to the existing terrace along with the rebuilding of an earlier extension, that currently forms the entrance from the car park. The new extensions effectively frame and contain the space to the west of the terrace, turning a previously dreary car park into a carefully ordered courtyard that retains some parking but is designed to provide a safe and welcoming arrival space.

We are delighted to work with Estate Management and the Cambridge Judge Business School on this unique project, located around the corner from our office. A strong local team, KJTait, Smith & Wallwork, Faithful + Gould and the London based Interior Designers Woods Bagot have worked together to transform the Grade II listed building into a 4 star Lifestyle Hotel. The extensive pre-application dialogue with the Cambridge City Council Planning and Conservation team has contributed significantly and positively to the design of the new extensions and the careful remodelling of the listed townhouses.
