Peter Williams is one of the founding directors of MCW Architects and continues to maintain a close relationship with the practice through mentorship and consultancy. He provides strategic advice and supports the practice on selected projects, drawing on his extensive experience leading masterplans and major developments for a wide range of universities. His insight into complex institutional structures, governance and estate strategy continues to inform the practice’s work and supports the development of the wider team.

The early years:
I always loved drawing and making models, and LEGO was probably my earliest connection with the building industry! It was a creative, communal, and endlessly flexible toy.

Influences:
The biggest early influence on my career direction was my art teacher, John Meade, who persuaded me to go to Canterbury College of Art to undertake a foundation course. My biggest architectural influence was my professor at the University of Edinburgh, Isi Metzstein (1928-2012), a funny, caring, passionate and inspirational architect.

Hopes - likes - loves:
I hope to survive long enough to meet all my grandchildren.

I enjoy exercise: walking the dog; swimming; playing golf; and cycling various bikes on and off road.

I love being by the sea: a rough day brings the surf; a calm day brings a surprising amount of tranquillity. Whatever the weather the sea always makes me happy.
